IBM and SAS Survey CFOs.
In conjunction with its first compliance and performance management conference, IBM conducted a survey of 450 CFOs. Bob Kennedy, IBM business consulting partner, noted that the survey showed the role of the finance executive is evolving from "compliance policeman" to strategic business partner. Hyperion senior product marketing manager Mike Malwitz, in a presentation at the conference, said that business performance management software fills the gap between shareholder expectations and reported results by providing a financial close process, long-range planning, scenario analysis, strategic modeling, and cascading scorecards. Dynamic planning, with rolling forecasts, operational budgeting, and driver-based planning also helps meet shareholder expectations, he said.

For the BetterManagement LIVE business conference, SAS and BetterManagement.com jointly conducted a survey of nearly 300 CFOs plus other senior business executives, representing a variety of industries. Only 25% of the respondents said they believe their organizations' current BI technology supports the strategic demands of the CFO. They said their technology doesn't allow them to effectively identify and exploit revenue opportunities, evaluate performance across the enterprise, or identify operating-level changes that would optimize overall performance. 88% cited sophisticated analytics and predictive planning as important or very important, while nearly as many said these functions are difficult to achieve with their existing financial intelligence systems. You can view a report summary at www.sas.com/solutions/financial/survey.pdf.

Performance Management Vendors Grow.
As Q3 earnings reports rolled in, companies selling performance management products had positive results. Witness Systems reported 27% license revenue growth over the year and a cash balance increase to $63 million. Synygy registered a 50th consecutive quarter of profitable revenue growth. SuccessFactors grew its subscriber base to the half million mark, and also received recognition from Gartner, which gave it the highest standing in its Employee Performance Management Marketscope.
