re: Government IT Pros See Savings, Challenges In Big Data
So, applying big data analysis to government operations could save the feds $380 billion? Well here's my response to that: Is that all?! Almost exactly 2 years ago, the CEOs of IBM and Dell unveiled an IT-driven plan that they said could save Uncle Sam $1 trillion. These are eye-opening estimates to be sure, but does anyone really believe them? When OMB talks of savings realized through IT efficiencies and performance it's in increments of $2 billion or $5 billion, not hundreds of billions. IT vendors need to be careful about setting false expectations, and back up pie-in-the-sky estimates with well documented case studies.
