Sophos executive Ron O'Brien named to Economic Crime Institute board of advisors

BOSTON -- Sophos, a world leader in IT security and control, today announced that Ron O’Brien, Sophos’s Boston-based senior security analyst, has been named to the Economic Crime Institute Board of Advisors. O’Brien joins a board of representatives from major companies and government agencies, including LexisNexis, VISA USA, KPMG, JP Morgan Chase, Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Economic Crime Institute has been at the forefront of cutting edge societal issues regarding fraud, computer crime, cyber crime, and computer and information security since its inception in 1988. The organization’s dedication to preventing, detecting and investigating economic crime and fraud is becoming more important in this age of advanced threats. Sophos’s recent Threat Report indicated a significant increase in web-based threats—a majority of which are used to exploit users by gaining access to personal financial information. Through the first six months of 2007, the number of infected web pages increased from 5,000 malicious pages in January to 29,700 web pages in June.

“It is becoming increasingly important for individuals to be educated about issues involving web-based threats, economic crime and information security,” said O’Brien. “I’m happy to be associated with a board dedicated to educating individuals on the hazards of economic crime, while also providing methods of prevention and solutions if an attack occurs.”
