You Can't Plan For Everything

Despite having its own meteorological team advising where Katrina would likely hit hardest, UPS Inc. lost its primary data networks at 53 sites across Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

So ingenuity had to kick in. Immediately after the storm, UPS's telecommunications team came up with an idea: Reconfigure routers and switches on voice networks to be used as data networks and have them dial out to long-distance carriers, bypassing inoperable local phone networks. And in a few cases, UPS turned to DSL or cable modems.
