Wireless Protocols Multiply

Next-step wireless protocols are gaining popularity. Last week, Cisco Systems said a number of 802.11g access points and upgrade kits will be available by the end of the month, and it revealed plans to release combination 802.11a/b/g cards in the first quarter of 2004. Meanwhile, competitor Netgear Inc. launched the WG302 ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Access Point, designed to meet the requirements of small and medium-sized businesses and hot-spot deployments. The 802.11g standard has a data throughput rate nearly five times greater than the commonly used 802.11b, reaching connection speeds as high as 54 Mbps.
