Vendors Release Web Security Products

Netscape this week is launching a version of its DirectoryServer with enhanced scalability and performance. DirectoryServer 4.0 holds more than 50 million user entries, up from10 million in 3.0, and can handle 5,000 queries per second,up from 1,000. The server is available immediately at $2.50a user. Netscape will also offer a new version of its systemfor managing digital certificates, used to encrypt anddecrypt messages sent over the Internet. The NetscapeCertificate Management System 4.0, available next quarterfor $10 a user, will support millions of geographicallydispersed users.

In other rollouts, VeriSign is shipping the secondgeneration of its public key infrastructure (PKI) platformand adding partners to its network of digital-certificateservice providers. GTE CyberTrust is introducing a PKIaccelerator program that combines technology and services tolet companies quickly deploy digital certificates fordesktop applications such as secure Web access and fileencryption.

Xcert International Inc. is rolling out a PKI suite thatwill scale to hundreds of thousands of users and supportcryptography for handheld applications. Hewlett-Packard isintroducing a Web authorization system for screening accessto Web site content. HP's Praesidium DomainGuard andDomainGuard Rules fit into Netscape Web servers and link toan LDAP directory. DomainGuard, which provides Web objectsecurity, will ship in February starting at $2,450 for a100-user license. DomainGuard Rules supplies transaction-level security and will ship in the spring at $3,950 for100 users.
