UDU World Corp., a startup application-development company, today launched an information-retrieval product that gathers data from the Internet or a company's enterprise applications and presents it to the user as an E-mail attachment.
Called Active Inbox, the product is a desktop application that lets corporate users access information such as company reports or online stock quotes through an E-mail program or Internet browser. The application servers, which reside at UDU World headquarters in California, intercept incoming requests for information. Using a customized "Action Kit," a file that corporate subscribers create that contains company applications and data, the server interfaces with internal documents and secure Web sites to retrieve data from its source, then routes the information to the user as an attachment.
This program would be appealing to users who have to access several applications from multiple sources daily, says Warren Wilson, a senior analyst with Summit Strategies. But, he adds, UDU World is going to have to convince users that the application will simplify things for them. "Making application access easier through E-mail is pretty powerful," Wilson says, but a product that can do that "is not something that people are begging for."
The application runs on Windows, Macintosh, and the Palm operating systems. It is designed to work with low-bandwidth products, such as wireless phones or personal digital assistants, says Brian Craighead, UDU World deputy CEO.
For enterprise customers that deploy Active Inbox throughout the company, pricing is based per user through an annual contract. For Internet service providers and others that resell the application, UDU takes a percentage of the licensing fees.
