Two companies will move back-end storage to the forefront ofdata management next week. Tape vendor Exabyte Corp. willcombine hardware, software, and services to provide end-to-end backup and recovery for storage area networks, reducingadministrative complexity. Network-attached storage vendorNetwork Appliance Inc. will add software to its applianceservers that lets customers guarantee the availability ofimportant data.
Exabyte's network storage management (NetStorM) strategyincludes five components, starting with its own Arrowheadtape libraries that have been readied for the Fibre Channelinterconnect. The company is also guaranteeinginteroperability among Exabyte libraries and other SANdevices. Exabyte has established a lab to test othervendors' Fibre Channel hardware and software with its backupofferings and will certify products that are compatible withits systems. In addition, Exabyte is delivering analternative to using a disparate array of managementsoftware to administer all the components of a SAN. NetStorMis a single application that allows management of thesediverse devices from a single remote console that uses theWeb. Prices for Exabyte's Fibre Channel backup products willrange from $70,000 to $150,000; they will be available inMay.
Network Appliance also plans to simplify data administrationand management, but will use software intelligence residingon the existing network. The SnapRestore data recoverysoftware and SnapMirror data-replication software, availablenext week, will come bundled with the 700 line of NetworkAppliance filer-server appliances. The products will letcustomers replicate data from one device to another duringbackup and restore operations at planned and unplanneddowntimes. Customers pay extra for "keys" to unlock thesecapabilities for their products, ranging from $2,000 to$50,000. The vendor says 300 Gbytes of data can be movedacross the network in 15 minutes using these apps, andcustomers can replicate data based on capacity levels orpoints in time.
