Research In Motion Ltd. faces the prospect of a ban on providing BlackBerry service or selling the devices after the Supreme Court last week refused to stay a lower court ruling in the patent-infringement suit brought by NTP Inc. But the court wrangling continues.

... Taking a page from Google's playbook (again), Microsoft last week unveiled plans for an online book-search project next year. It will focus on books in the public domain, avoiding the copyright issues that have dogged Google Print.

... Google, meanwhile, confirmed that it's testing a service called Google Base that provides content-hosting and search capabilities that could one day compete with eBay Inc.

... The August Zotob attack cost the average company hit by the bot worm $97,000 to clean up, according to a report from security consultancy Cybertrust.

... Making a run at mainstream databases like Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, the open-source MySQL 5.0 was released last week, offering enterprise-class capabilities such as stored procedures, improved security, and metadata management.

... VeriSign Inc. last week acquired Retail Solutions Inc. for $24 million, putting it in the business of collecting point-of-sale data and selling it to retailers and consumer-goods makers.
