The Internet Collides With Hollywood



What is it they say in the movies? "It's just crazy enough to work." A cast of Hollywood characters--including George Takei (Sulu on "Star Trek")--are funding a new Internet incubator called Bold New World.

Backed by its own $30 million investment fund, Bold New World is a spin-off of Internet community Web site GeoCities. Michael Keegan, CEO of the firm, says that as far as he knows, it's the first incubator in Hollywood. Maybe so, but its definitely the first anywhere funded by Takei, actress Judith Light (TV's "Who's the Boss") and producer Norman Lear ("All in the Family"). Investors also include executives from Amgen and buzz-ridden Voxxy.com as well as a former Microsoft senior manager.

So far, Bold New World has invested in E-Latin Business, an outfit targeting Latin American E-commerce applications. It's also incubating LifeShirt and Plan4ever.com. LifeShirt makes a washable garment embedded with sensors to monitor 40 physical and emotional signs. Plan4ever bills itself as the premier end-of-life and death-care Internet portal.
