Telemarketing Law On Hold



Hours after congress passed legislation granting the Federal Trade Commission the authority it needs to enforce the the National Do-Not-Call Registry, the list hit another legal bump. Federal Judge Edward Nottingham issued a ruling on Sept. 25 in U.S. District Court in Denver that blocked the registry, saying it violates telemarketers' free-speech rights. The list of nearly 51 million phone numbers is scheduled to go into effect on Oct. 1. Congress had given the registry the green light after U.S. District Court Judge Lee West in Oklahoma City ruled a day earlier that that the FTC lacked the legislative authority to restrict telemarketing calls.
