Sybase Updates Adaptive Server

Sybase Inc. is thinking big. Yesterday, the company unveileda release of its Adaptive Server IQ data warehouse systemwith multiplexing technology, and announced the shipment ofa 64-bit version of its Adaptive Server Enterprise databaseengine--all with an eye on the growing demand for very largedatabase capabilities.

"Scalability has become more critical, and analyzing largedata sets has become more of an issue," says Jose Santa Ana,Dataquest senior industry analyst. Adaptive Server IQ12 willrun within multinode data warehouse systems, which Sybasesays will let the system support a virtually unlimitednumber of users on a read-only basis. Copies of AdaptiveServer IQ running on multiple nodes can be refreshed from amaster database, and nodes can be added without degradingperformance, according to Jack Sweeney, research anddevelopment VP in Sybase's Business Intelligence Division.

Sybase has also built its Omni middleware technology intothe IQ server: That frees the data warehouse system fromSybase's database engine and lets it run on databases fromOracle, IBM, and other vendors. The product also sports newavailability features and is easier to administer. IQ12 willship in March, with the multiplexing enhancement slated foravailability in May. Adaptive Server Enterprise for 64-bitcomputing is available immediately for Sun Solaris, HP-UX,Compaq Digital Unix, and IBM AIX platforms. Pricing for theworkplace version of Adaptive Server begins at $995, and theenterprise version starts at $3,995.
