IBM has opened a facility in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to deliver supercomputing cycles over the Internet, via VPN connections. GX Technology Corp., a seismic-data-processing company, will be among the first to use the facility, according to IBM. IBM will sell contracts for buying computing power on a cluster of Intel-based Linux systems, without leasing the equipment. IBM also will sell access to pSeries Unix servers. The facility is a project of IBM's Deep Computing group, formed in April to manage high-performance computing sales and work with advanced systems researchers.
