In a bid to round out its development product line, Sun Microsystems announced today that it has acquired NetBeans, a maker of Java-based development tools. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
By combining NetBean integrated development environment products with its newly acquired Forte Software product line, Sun says it will be able to provide Java Development Kit customers with a broader range of choices, from entry-level to enterprise-class offerings.
Sun also announced today the formation of a $200 million investment fund. The fund, according to Sun, is designed to help companies developing products and services based on Sun's technology and platforms. Sun intends to partner with venture capital firms and investment banks to identify minority investment opportunities in companies fueling the next generation of Internet deployment.
The company also said it has completed its $540 million acquisition of Forte, a stock transaction that was announced in August.
