The Executive Path
I don't disagree that knowing how the business works and how individuals inside the company do their jobs is a huge advantage when your job is to guide company technology but I do disagree with the statement that you don't have to know what technology is being used because your people should be handling that.  You should know what your people are handling more so than knowing how someone is using an industrial sewing machine.  Knowing how each department functions from a high level and digging in to their struggles at greater detail will help shape how you deliver services but you have to spread that knowledge to your team and not rely on them to just take care of things.
