Storage Vendors Focus On Improving Access To Data

New storage products and upgrades from Storage Technology and EMC are providing IT managers with faster, more flexible, and better-managed systems, and improving users' access to critical data.

StorageTek today will unveil a tape library architecture, dubbed Aegis, for storage area networks, and enhanced tape library management software. Products conforming to the Aegis architecture can use Fibre Channel drives internally and also provide external Fibre Channel connectivity, to take full advantage of the 100-Mbytes-per-second bandwidth offered by the interconnect technology. The first Aegis product will be the StorageTek L700 Tape Library, which can use 20 Fibre Channel drives and 700 cartridges to support up to 27.6 terabytes; the system can also use other types of drives, including DLT and SuperDLT. Pricing starts at $77,100.

In addition, StorageTek's updated management software, Horizon, will be accessible via Tivoli's Netview enterprise management software; Computer Associates' UniCenter and Hewlett-Packard's OpenView already support Horizon. StorageTek says the software also is the first of its kind to allow multiple apps to share the same tape library securely, meaning users won't have to buy separate libraries for each app.

EMC today is adding Linux to the many operating systems its Symmetrix devices support. EMC says the move comes as more large enterprises begin to embrace Linux, and as startups grounded in Linux face growing storage requirements.

Justin Anderson, CIO of startup, an online vendor of holiday supplies in Irving, Texas, has 12 Dell servers running Linux. The company recently purchased 600 Gbytes of Symmetrix online storage because of its extensive redundancy features and its ability to scale to 9 terabytes. "We wanted to make sure data will be available," says Anderson. "We also needed an easy growth path when we reach spikes in demand."
