Star Power Drove Biggest Traffic Boosts On The Web

Celebrity news including the new Cruise baby, Katie Couric, and the memorial to "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin were behind some of the largest page view jumps.

Celebrity news, such as the first pictures of the baby of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, drove some of the biggest jumps in traffic on the Web this week, an Internet intelligence firm said Friday.

The first public photos of Suri Cruise accounted for more than half of the 111 percent jump in traffic to CondeNet, the site for Conde Nast magazines, Nielsen/NetRatings said. The number of visitors soared to 3.5 million from 1.6 million.

ABC Primetime saw its traffic grow 85 percent to 1.1 million visitors, as fans of "Grey's Anatomy," "Dancing with the Stars," and "Desperate Housewives" visited the site in anticipation of season premieres. Katie Couric's debut as the first female solo evening news anchor on CBS News drove an 83 percent jump in online traffic to 1.3 million visitors.

On Discovery.com, traffic jumped 80 percent to2.5 million, with nearly half of the additional visitors heading to Animal Planet to see the memorial video of crocodile hunter Steve Irwin, who died in a stingray attack while snorkeling.
