Totally agree about the awkwardness of mobile coupons mitigating their use. (In addition to clueless stares, let's not underestimate the impact of the daggers flying from the eyes of the people behind you in line when you pull out your phone to display your coupon.) People choose credit cards based on the cards' rewards programs. I don't think there's any doubt that people would choose to use a card if the backer tied into the many incentive programs organizations are offering on social media platforms. The question is, will consumers trust a platform like Facebook with their credit card info?
