The company says Velocity 7.5 can search up to one billion e-mails on a single server. This week Vivisimo announced the 7.5 version of its Velocity search engine. The company offers its search engine both for direct sale to enterprises and for OEMs to embed in other products, such as an e-mail archive.

Vivisimo says the new version includes on-demand index management, which can move data sets into and out of RAM, allowing a machine to scale to very large numbers of searches. For example, in an e-mail archive application, if a user queries a group of mailboxes, those mailboxes would be swapped into memory while inactive mailboxes would be moved out. The company claims this will enable a single server to search a billion e-mails.

Also new to 7.5 is an e-discovery feature called Traceable Accuracy. This feature creates a log of every document or file touched by the engine's crawler, and whether that file was included in the index. If the crawler encounters a corrupt file or document and can't index it, the log will show that exception.

This type of log is important in a discovery exercise both to ensure that reviewers don't miss potentially relevant information, and as part of the record of the discovery exercise that can be presented to opposing counsel or the court. Traceable Accuracy is available as an API for third-party e-discovery vendors.

The 7.5 release is available immediately, and is a free upgrade for customers with maintenance contracts.
