You want fair, objective software rankings? We've got them. In fact, we run them all the time. And our latest set of reviews, new this week, covers performance management tools.Ventana Research compiled a list of more than 30 vendors and their business performance software products, and ranked them in a new story from Intelligent Enterprise that's now posted on Business Intelligence Pipeline. The research firm studied the maturity of software vendors and products, and their appropriateness for carrying out performance management initiatives. The overall top scorers may surprise you.

The Ventana scorecard is designed to measure software capabilities in line with three main components of performance management. The first is the ease with which tools help align business actions and plans with managerial goals. Second is a measurement of the way software enables planning how a workforce or business operation can help reach desired goals. Third is the process by which executives measure performance on an ongoing and historical basis. Ventana has ranked software packages by each component individually, in addition to providing an overall ranking.

The rankings cover only products released since November 2004. Ventana Research is an independent firm that's unassociated with any specific vendors or sets of vendors.

An important note: There's no technology that, by itself, is going to improve a company's performance. Business performance management isn't just about software -- it's a process, one involving the design of metrics that can measure how well a business is operating (that's the really hard part for most organizations) and the constant monitoring of those metrics over time. It's also about malleability, and being able to shift the ways business functions operate as time progresses. But knowing how tools stack up against one another is a good way for establishing a baseline for matching software to your performance management needs.
