In Brief

High-level intelligence at a glance

Government Boosts ERP Market.
U.S. federal spending on ERP products and services will rise 37% in the next five years according to INPUT, a government market intelligence firm. INPUT attributes the increase to system consolidation at the Department of Homeland Security. "We expect this growth to continue regardless of what the November elections bring," said Chris Campbell, senior analyst. Fiscal year 2004 federal ERP spending was $5.6 billion.

SAP Makes New Disclosure.
In a novel development, SAP disclosed the revenue split between large and small customers. Small or midsized businesses, defined as having less than $1 billion in annual revenue or less than 2,500 employees, brought in 28% of revenue in Q2.

Oracle Jobs Expand in India.
Oracle plans to hire 250 engineers every month in India, according to the Dow Jones Newswires, in addition to the 6,000 engineers currently employed in Bangalore. Oracle expects the Asian region to bring in 15% of the company's total revenue this year.

And Then There Were None.
After a disappointing quarter, Informatica's last founding executive left the company. Gaurav Dhillon, former president and CEO, was said to have resigned to pursue other interests. He's replaced by Sohaib Abbasi, who had retired from Oracle after a long and noteworthy career there.

Storage Networking Growing.
Two forces have combined to make storage a booming industry: increasing volumes of data passing through the enterprise and new government regulations. According to a Yankee Group report, the storage networking market, a subset of the total storage market, will share the boon. How much it grows will be contingent partly on how far it penetrates the small-to midsized business (SMB) market by making Fibre Channel SANs more affordable and easier to deploy and maintain, the study says. How much the storage networking vendors expand into large enterprises "depends on continued innovation in director features and functionality including multiprotocol support for iSCSI and FCIP to network lower-cost servers into the SAN and to connect SAN islands for better manageability. Larger enterprises will begin to look for heterogeneous switch vendor support," says Stephanie Balaouras, Enterprise Computing & Networking senior analyst.

Another Cost of Open Source.
Besides the realized threat to Linux that SCO's lawsuits represent, there's also a danger that other software companies could file patent-infringement lawsuits against companies using open source code in their own software. A market opportunity abhors a vacuum, so now you can buy insurance to mitigate your risks associated with open source code. Open Source Risk Management claims to be the "first and only vendor-neutral provider of Open Source indemnification."

Get Your Free Database Code.
At LinuxWorld, both Computer Associates and IBM presented database gifts to the open source world. CA released Ingres r3 under its own open source license, the CA Trusted Open Source License. The day before, IBM released its Cloudscape Java-based embeddable database to the Apache Foundation. IBM hopes Cloudscape, later planned for commercial release as Derby, will encourage more Java Web applications to be built.
