DashBriefs: IBM Buys ISS; Oracle Buys Sigma Dynamics' Predictive Analytics IP
IBM enhances its security offerings by acquiring Internet Security Systems. Meanwhile, Oracle looks to spruce up its Fusion Middleware with a company purchase of its own.
IBM Buys Internet Security Systems
In late August, IBM announced it will enhance its security offerings by acquiring Internet Security Systems. ISS makes network intrusion-detection and -prevention appliances and offers managed security services. IBM plans to make ISS a standalone business unit within IBM Global Technology Services' Infrastructure Management Services Unit, retaining the ISS brand and product development operations. The acquisition will bring IBM into a new realm of competition against network security providers such as Cisco Systems and Check Point Software Technologies.
Oracle Buys Sigma Dynamics' Predictive Analytics IP
Oracle plans to enhance its Fusion Middleware with real-time predictive analytics technology from Sigma Dynamics, which it purchased in late August. Sigma Dynamics' Real-time Decision software combines customer insight and business requirements to make recommendations in customer interactions and operational decisionmaking. Decision applications include real-time offer management, field service optimization, predictive call routing and fraud detection. Sigma Dynamics' technology was already embedded in Oracle's Siebel Real-Time Decisions product within its Business Intelligence Suite. Oracle plans to continue to make the technology available as standalone software and in conjunction with enterprise apps.
