CA Integrates Data Modeler With Data Profiling

The addition of Exeros' technology adds the ability to analyze data in legacy systems, perform column analysis and discover primary-foreign key relationships.

CA has released a new version of ERwin Data Modeler that has been integrated with Exeros' data-profiling technology.

The integration adds the ability to analyze data in legacy systems, perform column analysis and discover primary-foreign key relationships. As a result, data models for legacy systems that lack documentation don't have to be manually reconstructed.

In general, use of a profiler can improve data quality for use in applications, data marts, data warehouses and master data management hubs. CA offers the Exeros technology under the name CA ERwin Data Profiler. The companies announced the distribution deal in December.

Other features within the Data Modeler upgrade, which CA introduced Monday, include the use of Business Objects Crystal Reports for graphical reporting on information in a variety of popular formats, such as spreadsheets,PDF and HTML. In addition, the upgrade can exchange metadata with a wider range of data management tools, including Oracle Business Intelligence, Cognos, SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management and others.

The upgrade also offers support for more databases, such as Teradata, SQL Server 2008 and DB2 z/OS v9, as well as support for application development with Microsoft Visual Team System Edition 2008. The latter improves development and deployment ofSQL Server applications in Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server and Windows Vista.

Finally, the latest version offers customization of data definition language code generation, which makes it easier to set up auto code generation via the tool's templates, according to CA.

CA ERwin Data Modeler and ERwin Data Profiler sell for $3,995 each per seat.

CA's biggest competitor in data modeling is Embarcadero Technologies, which released version 8.0 of ER/Studio last month. While CA is the market leader, Embarcadero has been making progress through a renewed focus on product refininement, coupled with consonant marketing efforts.
