And Now For A Word On Methodology

Some readers were upset that the business intelligence tools judged in a head-to-head comparison we're running don't include Business Objects or Hyperion. Well, there's a reason for that.

Some readers were upset that the business intelligence tools judged in a head-to-head comparison we're running don't include Business Objects or Hyperion. Well, there's a reason for that.We can't do reviews if vendors won't cooperate by providing access to their tools. And during the preparation of a story we're running from Network Computing, some of the big names wouldn't play along. So, they're not there.

Props to Actuate, Applix, Cognos, Information Builders, Microsoft and Microstrategy, all of whom had the confidence in their tools' capabilities to feel secure about having them reviewed.

Not knowing the whole story behind the story, some readers reacted with dismay -- no, let's call it thinly veiled rage -- that some of the other names were left out of the review. There was even a suggestion that we left out Business Objects because we have some hidden agenda designed to promote Cognos, which got the highest marks in the story. Not the case, I assure you.

I can understand readers' feelings on this point. I'd like to see a broader set of comparisons too. But it won't always be that way. Maybe never.
