AIIM Offers A Guide For Starting An Electronic Document Management System

The guide, called the ARP-1, Analysis, Selection, and Implementation of EDMS, presents a set of procedures and activities that should be considered when initiating such a project.

AIIM, a nonprofit group that provides education, research and best practices for managing business information, has released a guide for starting an electronic document management system.

The guide, called the ARP-1, Analysis, Selection, and Implementation of EDMS, presents a set of procedures and activities that should be considered when initiating such a project. The guide includes an outline of recommended activities that need to be completed in phases. In addition, the document lists national and international standards available to provide further guidance.

The new guide is a revision of the AIIM Implementation Guidelines, and describes best practices from a "vendor-neutral perspective," Robert Blatt, president of consulting company Electronic Image Designers and chair of the AIIM guidelines committee said.

"The committee was overwhelmed by the popularity and interest by end-user organizations and the number of copies that were downloaded of the previous version of the best practice," Blatt said in a statement released Monday. "Many organizations have indicated this information has been of tremendous value and helped to improve the overall project quality and success."

The latest guidelines are available at no charge on the AIIM Web site.
