Software Companies Rank Third In Customer Service: Poll

Supermarkets and banks lead the list, but high-tech firms score very respectably among consumers.

Software companies ranked third in customer service, behind supermarkets and banks, a consumer poll released Tuesday showed.

Fully 79 percent of more than 1,000 consumers surveyed by Harris Interactive said software companies were doing a good job of serving customers. Supermarkets led the list of industries with 91 percent of respondents giving them the thumbs up. Banks were second with 80 percent.

Also making the top 10 were Internet service providers, online search engines, computer hardware companies, and online retailers. Other industries on the list included packaged food companies, hospitals and telephone companies.

The high-tech industry managed to stay out of the list of least favorable industries. Tobacco companies were at the bottom with only 34 percent of consumers saying they were doing a good job, followed by oil companies 36 percent and managed care companies, such as HMOs, 41 percent.
