Siemens Debuts Unified Messaging System

Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. enteredthe unified messaging arena yesterday with Xpressions 470, aWindows NT Microsoft Exchange-based messaging platform thatcombines voice mail, E-mail, and fax.

The system lets users send and receive voice mail from theirE-mail client software, record voice-mail greetings, andadjust the volume and speed of received voice mail. Usersalso can convert voice mail into E-mail, listen to E-mailusing text-to-speech features, and combine voice and textinto a single message that can be forwarded to other users.All voice, fax, and E-mail messages are stored in a singleinbox.

The Xpressions platform also includes Web-basedadministration features that are integrated with Exchange.The platform runs on Siemens' HiCom 300 PBX and requiresSiemens handsets. Also at the Electronic MessagingAssociation's EMA '99 conference in Dallas, Siemens launchedCollaboration Services, a set of consulting services forcorporations interested in migrating to an NT-basedtelephony platform.
