SAS Institute Inc. yesterday began shipping its HR Vision decision-support system for monitoring and analyzing human resources information. The software is built on SAS Institute's data warehousing technology.
HR Vision will provide human resources managers with a centralized means of viewing information such as employee compensation and benefits, head count and labor turnover, position management, and regulatory requirements. Managers will also be able to generate queries to analyze the data and create reports on the findings. A human resources director, for example, could use the tool to identify employees with special skills for open positions.
The new software comes at a time when human resources operations are under pressure to play a more strategic role in making companies competitive, rather than simply manage personnel costs. "There is an increasing demand for HR to provide strategies that will differentiate enterprise performance. This new focus for HR will necessitate changes in the business of HR, with greater emphasis on measurement, forecasting, and planning," says a September 1998 Gartner Group report, "Key Issues: Human Resource Management."
HR Vision will be capable of pulling data from multiple data sources, including IBM's DB2, Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and Ingres databases, IBM VSAM systems, or flat files. The software can also link with online analytical processing systems for conducting multi-dimensional analysis by "slicing and dicing" the data according to such dimensions as age, sex, ethnicity, location, and more.
The HR Vision system runs on Windows and Windows NT client and server platforms. It carries a price tag of $120,000.
