SAP Looks To Boost Pervasive Computing

Looking to take a lead in the nascent market for "pervasive computing" technology, enterprise application vendor SAP made connecting the mobile workforce to the business a focal point of its TechEd user event in Philadelphia.

SAP says it has developed portable, reusable applications that make use of standard application programming interfaces, standard database protocols, and tools in its mySAP.com application environment. The applications provide a standards-based foundation to integrate heterogeneous platforms that will help users more quickly take advantage of an array of pervasive computing technology. The vendor also outlined partnerships with IBM, Microsoft, Sybase, and others to develop new pervasive-computing technology to provide employees using handheld and portable Internet devices access to corporate information held in mySAP.com.

Working with Microsoft, SAP says it will develop a business process integration over the Internet to link Windows CE and other mobile devices to SAP applications using Microsoft's BizTalk, an E-commerce framework for XML schemas. The two software giants plan to demo products based on BizTalk and SAP business applications at SAP's user conference next month. Meanwhile, IBM has already begun to offer services built on its Application Framework for E-business to also extend access to SAP applications from mobile devices.
