SanDisk, Sony To Co-Develop Memory-Card Spec For Pro Camcorders

The collaboration is unique in that SanDisk and Sony sell competing technology standards when it comes to removable flash-card memory.

SanDisk and Sony on Monday said they have agreed to co-develop a memory-card specification with high-speed data transfer technology for professional camcorders and video-editing equipment.

The SxS specification will use flash memory and comply with the ExpressCard industry standard, which has been adopted by PC manufacturers as a replacement for the PC Card format, the companies said. An SxS card would connect directly to computer systems through the high-speed PCI-Express bus.

Sony plans to build support for the spec in its XDCAM EX series of professional camcorders. SxS memory cards from SanDisk and Sony are expected to be available later this year. The collaboration is unique in that SanDisk and Sony sell competing technology standards when it comes to removable flash-card memory.

Among the expected benefits of an SxS card is the ability to transfer large video files faster than with current technology. The target transfer speed is 800 megabits per second. Another benefit is size. An SxS card is about half the size of PC Cards, the companies said.
