Reprogrammable Radios To Solve Military's Compatibility Problem

SRA International leads team working on 5-year, $41 million effort

A problem U.S. and allied fighting forces face on the battlefield is incompatible communications devices. Radios used by the Army, for instance, can't always communicate with those of the Air Force's flight controllers who dispatch jet fighters to support ground troops.

The Defense Department's Joint Tactical Radio System's joint program office is charged with remedying this problem. This week, it awarded a 5-year, $41 million task order to a team headed by IT integrator SRA International Inc. to provide systems engineering and program support to the effort.

The Joint Tactical Radio System consists of a family of radios with reprogrammable software that will provide U.S. troops with a single, integrated voice and data system. The Defense Department established the joint program office to ensure standardization technology across all the military services and those of its coalition partners.

The SRA team includes Aeronix, Alion Science and Technology, Blue Collar Objects, Booz Allen & Hamilton, Dynamics Research, Galaxy Scientific, and Log.Sec.
