Rackable Systems on Monday introduced five servers for high-performance computing that deliver up to twice the density of its existing systems.

The new rack-mount designs are aimed at financial, oil and gas, scientific research, and other organizations that use HPC systems. In addition, the systems, which are available with processors from Advanced Micro Devices and Intel, are geared toward Internet companies with large data centers that need to support large numbers of users.

The new systems include four 2u designs and one 9u system. The former include the XE2004-SC1, the XE2006-SC1, the XE2006-F1, and the XE2208-SC1. The first system has four hot-swap 3.5-inch drives, the middle two have six drives, and the latter one has eight. With the exception of the XE2006-F1, the 2u systems have dual-socket Intel 5100 boards. The XE2006-F1 has a dual-socket AMD Opteron board.

The XE2004-SC1 can store up to 4 TB per u, or rack unit, while the XE2006-SC1 and XE2006-F1 up to 6 TB/u. The XE2208-SC1 is designed with double the density of the other 2u servers with four Intel dual-socket 5100 boards, two per u.

The 9u system, the Scale Out Blade ST2000, is a standard rack-mount enclosure supporting three power modules and 12 dual-socket server modules, each with four 3.5-inch drives for up to 21 cores per u and 11 TB/u. The system is Rackable's highest-density product.

The Intel servers support dual- and quad-core Intel Xeon 5100, 5300, and 5400 processors. The systems leverage the 5100 chipset, which supports up to 48 GB of DDR2 memory. The XE2006-F1 supports dual- and quad-core AMD Opteron 2200 and 2300 series processors.

The new systems are scheduled for release within 30 days. Pricing was not disclosed.
