Qwest And HP In Storage Deal

Upstart telecom carrier Qwest Communications International Inc. today announced plans to use several hundred million dollars worth of Hewlett-Packard's storage technology, both in its network hosting centers and to develop storage services for sale to Qwest customers.

Qwest and HP will offer backup and advanced recovery services, disaster assessment services, and professional services for storage--all by year's end. Qwest expects to generate $200 million in revenue in the first year of the deal with HP, and up to $1.5 billion by the close of the three-year deal.

Separately, Qwest said it will double the number of its CyberCenters by building facilities in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Sterling, Va. The centers can host Web sites and other applications.

Qwest's CyberCenters--which currently number seven--are connected to the carrier's nationwide fiber-optic network. The carrier will work with HP to develop special optical interfaces between the lines and the various HP storage systems.
