School Uniform should be Compulsory for Every Victorian High School
Every Victorian High school should make it compulsory for their students to wear a designated uniform. Uniforms in schools are an extremely good idea for a variety of different reasons. I've decided to write my essay on this topic because it's a very important question nowadays. It will be proven those positive outcomes, which come from wearing a uniform, such as a cost, reduction in peer pressure and school reputation, will far outweigh any minor negative outcomes.
Having school uniforms is cost-effective and therefore beneficial to parents purchasing them. Many people argue that uniforms are too expensive, but in the long run it works out less expensive. With a uniform, the buyer only has to lay out an initial cost. Whereas if the students are wearing their casual clothes the costs are ongoing, as more clothes need to be purchased as the student grows and wears out their clothes. Uniforms will usually last students throughout the duration of high school, with only minor amendments needing to be made.
The wearing of uniforms can also reduce peer pressure, which is a serious problem in high schools. The competition between adolescents is a key problem that would arise if uniforms were not worn. There would be competition to see who had the trendiest or most expensive clothes. This could lead to problems such as bullying and students not being included with the rest of their peers. If uniforms were to be made compulsory it would reduce the amount of peer pressure and bullying as everyone would be issued with the same thing to wear, and there could be no competition on who had the best or most expensive.
The reputation of the school the student attends is also a major factor that would be benefited by the wearing of a uniform. Parents try to send their child to the best school possible. The way in which the public views the students has an adverse effect on the way in which they view the school. A good school is not only one who is seen to have good academic results but is also one who is seen to display themselves correctly. Students in a uniform are easy to identify and therefore well behaved and well spoken students are a reflection of a good school. Students are also less likely to misbehave if they know they can be identified and that reports of their behavior will be sent back to the school.
Therefore, it is easy to see that in terms of cost, reduction of peer pressure and the reputation of schools, having a uniform is far more beneficial than not having one. Having uniforms costs less than having to buy new clothes all the time, it reduces the amount of competition and bullying in schools and upholds the reputation of the school by putting the best view forward to the public. Uniforms must become compulsory in all Victorian High schools as it is of a huge benefit not only to students but to parents and teachers as well.
