Pelion Software Helps With Lean Manufacturing

Pelion Manufacturing Process Optimization Demand Manager 7.0 features a real-time resource-planning engine that compares actual demand with parts and materials stored in the factory.

Lean-manufacturing techniques that let companies simplify processes and reduce cycle times are key to smooth-running factories. Pelion Systems Inc.on Monday released an upgrade to its Demand Manager scheduling software that's designed to help meet those goals.

The upgrade, Pelion Manufacturing Process Optimization Demand Manager 7.0, features a real-time resource-planning engine that compares actual demand with parts and materials stored in the factory, in order to determine daily production schedules. The upgrade gives operations managers insight into the capacity and labor requirements of customer demands, says Dave Gleditsch, chief technology officer at Pelion. "Access to this type of customer-driven manufacturing information is a tremendous competitive advantage, as customers in our automotive group are now experiencing the ability to be more responsive to market needs and the ever-tightening production life cycle," he says.

Having the correct materials on hand to build products based on actual demand is fundamental to lean manufacturing, a method used by high-tech and automotive industries. "Production scheduling has a major impact for on-time delivery," says John Fontanella, VP of research at the Aberdeen Group. "Demand Manager is taking in information from suppliers and analyzing it against the material on the shop floor, taking into consideration the viabilities to make decisions quickly to direct the production of the product."

Pelion's software integrates with existing material resource planning, enterprise resource planning, and advanced planning and scheduling platforms.
