Partnership Could Lower Costs Of Streaming Media

Broadcast.com Inc. and Level 3 Communications Inc. plan tomake streaming media affordable for the masses.

The companies yesterday disclosed a five-year partnership,under which Broadcast.com will use Level 3's internationalIP network to deliver most of its audio and video content ata lower cost. Broadcast.com will be able to use the newLevel 3 network--which is based on IP and fibre technologyand allows access to unlimited amounts of bandwidth--inaddition to the traditional networks it obtains frombackbone providers for transmitting broadband content.Broadcast.com says this will result in reduced bandwidthcosts associated with Web media services such as Internetbroadcasts and seminars, live audio, and videotransmissions.

The companies also are planning to collaborate on futuremulticasting products, and on developing improved methods ofdelivering broadband digital content and streaming services,though neither company would discuss details.
