PanAmSat Beams Live Video To Handhelds

Company says demo shows how handheld device users will receive broadband video when mobile devices are fitted with WiMAX.

PanAmSat is pushing live video feeds to attendees at today's WiMAX Forum Plenary in Vancouver, Canada. The satellite company contends that this is how handheld device users will receive broadband video when mobile devices are fitted with WiMAX.

Describing the event as "the first satellite-delivered (demonstration of) live video to handheld devices," PanAmSat said the 10 streaming video channels include two from Trinity Workplace Learning, which transmitted live feeds from its law enforcement, fire, and emergency training networks.

"By providing wireless broadband access, emergency personnel such as firefighters and police officers can be in immediate contact with the crisis situation," according to PanAmSat. Also participating in the demonstration is KenCast Inc., which encodes and transcodes transmissions to handheld devices. The demo is uplinked to PanAmSat's Galaxy 11 satellite.

"Satellite-delivered WiMAX technology is the future for handheld devices such as smartphones and laptops," said Bruce Haymes, PanAmSat's senior vice president of business development, in a statement. "WiMAX will also enable the delivery of IPTV throughout the U.S. as well as being integrated into our satellite news gathering."
