Oracle Expands Front-Office Apps With Acquisition

Oracle pushed further into the front office yesterday withits acquisition of Geodan EDT, a Netherlands manufacturer of software for field-service scheduling and planning. Oracle did not disclose terms of the deal.

The company says the software will extend the capabilities of help desks. While current customer-service software may record trouble tickets and service requests, it does little to ensure that the correct service representative actually gets to the customer when needed.

The software, which will be renamed Oracle Scheduler, will include functions such as time and day scheduling, distance- based scheduling that takes into account distances and best routes, and rules-based scheduling that takes into account skills and preferences. It's available immediately, with a point release that integrates into Oracle applications due within 120 days. Oracle would not disclose pricing.
