Online Holiday Sales Ahead Of Last Year

Sports and fitness are high-fliers, as are furniture and appliances, and apparel and accessories, a research firm says.

As of Dec. 2nd, online shoppers had spent 24 percent more than last year, a research firm said Sunday.

During the first 32 days of the holiday season, consumers spent $9.75 billion, compared with $7.84 billion during the same period last year, ComScore Networks said in its weekly update. The research firm marks the beginning of the season as Nov. 1.

The sports and fitness category recorded a stronger than average increase so far, with shoppers spending 59 percent more on sports and exercise equipment and on clothing from sports teams. Other above average performers were furniture and appliances, 50 percent; and apparel and accessories, 37 percent.

"Early results confirm that this is going to be another excellent year for online buying," Gian Fulgoni, chairman of ComScore, said in a statement.

ComScore expects spending to remain 24 percent higher than last year, with the final projection for the season pegged at $19.6 billion. Spending for the full year is also expected to rise by 24 percent to $82.7 billion.
