Novell-SuSE Combo Shows Profit

Novell last week reported a $10.1 million profit on sales of $267.1 million for its first quarter, ended Jan. 31, the first since the acquisition of SuSE Linux for $210 million in cash. Novell improved on the same quarter last year, when it lost $11.9 million on revenue of $260.0 million.

Novell has positioned itself to attack "high-growth opportunities"--Linux in particular, chairman, president, and CEO Jack Messman said in a press release. It will attempt to do this despite a pending lawsuit in which SCO Group alleges that Novell has, among other things, improperly filed copyright registrations for Unix technology with the United States Copyright Office. Novell denies the allegations and has promised to contribute money to defend any customers that SCO Group sues.
