Netscape.com Overhaul Coming

America Online Inc. is reportedly getting ready to overhaul Netscape.com.

America Online Inc. is reportedly getting ready to overhaul Netscape.com.

The online portal that has held a second-class citizen position to AOL's own entertainment portal hasn't been updated since last May, when AOL released version 8 of the Netscape browser.

But that's apparently going to change soon.

PaidContent.org, which covers digital media and is owned by ContentNext, reports that AOL plans to relaunch Netscape.com as a user-driven news aggregation site, similar to Digg.

The new Netscape.com would be headed by Jason Calacanis, which runs Weblogs Inc. inside of AOL, which is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. The latter company bought the blog network last year.

Andrew Weinstein, a spokesman for Netscape.com, refused on Friday to comment on the PaidContent.org report.

"We don't comment on rumor or speculation," he said.

However, Weinstein did not deny that some type of overhaul might be in the works.
