Navy-Marine Corps Intranet Gets New Leader

Rear Adm. James Godwin III has been appointed to head the intranet, replacing Rear Adm. Charles Munns.

The Navy and Marine Corps Intranet, commonly known as NMCI, will get a new leader. The Navy says Rear Adm. James Godwin III will head NMCI. No starting date has been given. Godwin now is program executive officer for Tactical Aircraft Programs at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland.

Godwin replaces Rear Adm. Charles Munns, who's been nominated to be a vice admiral. Munns will be reassigned as commander of the Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, and commander of the Submarine Allied Command, Atlantic, based in Norfolk, Va.

NMCI, which is outsourced to a number of IT integrators, led by EDS, is an enterprisewide initiative that's making a full range of network-based information services available to sailors and Marines for day-to-day activities and in war--including secure, universal access to integrated voice, video, and data communications. Eventually, NMCI will provide pier-side connectivity to Navy vessels in port, and link more than 360,000 desktops across the United States as well as sites in Puerto Rico, Iceland, and Cuba.
