RFID is taking off in the health care sector. One RFID chip vendor, VeriChip, is showing off a new system that allows hospitals and health workers to track patient information for diabetes patients on wireless RFID chips.The company showed off its new platform, the VeriMed Patient Identification System, at the Diabetes Expo in Atlanta.

The system uses an implantable RFID chip with a handheld RFID scanner and a patient database to give medical workers immediate access to health information for patients in need of emergency treat who are unable communicate. The company has implanted RFID chips on 18 volunteer patients and hopes to expand the program.
