Phantom Phone Vibrations -- And Pocket Dialing

I thought I was the only one who experienced these phenomena, but it turns out that "many mobile phone addicts and BlackBerry junkies report feeling vibrations when there are none" while others find their phones make calls all on their own.

I thought I was the only one who experienced these phenomena, but it turns out that "many mobile phone addicts and BlackBerry junkies report feeling vibrations when there are none" while others find their phones make calls all on their own.At least so claims an AP story by Ellen Simon yesterday. Apparently it seems that we get so used to the darn things vibrating all the time, that we feel it happening even when it's not.

Sometimes it's "a point of pride," but for other folks "it's one more tech irritation." But the creepiest explanation is that "it's a matter of projecting hope onto their wireless device." It seems we feel our phones vibrating because we want someone to be calling them.

I don't know why I get the phantom vibes, but I do know why my phone makes calls by itself. It because my pathetic low-end Blackberry makes it really difficult to the lock the keyboard. Put it in your pocket, the wrong button gets pushed, and presto, you're calling Kathmandu. Or your gardener.

The article describes this as a phone having a "favorite friend," but in my family this is known as "pocket dialing" and is the source of much teasing. Being told by your wife that "your pocket dialed me this afternoon" is soooo humiiliating. But its much, much worse when you pocket-dial a customer.
