As soon as Google announced Android 2.2 Froyo at its I/O conference, the first question on everyone's mind was: Will My Phone Get It? Google didn't answer that question, but HTC sort of did.Up until yesterday, Android 2.1 Eclair was the bees knees, despite the fact that it has been around since early January. In fact, the last two weeks has seen a huge surge in the presence of Android 2.1, as phone makers and network operators push out updates to their existing line ups of Android devices. Then Google announced Android 2.2.

According to information from Google, its Nexus One device will be the first to update to Android 2.2. That makes sense, as it was the first Android 2.1 phone. The Motorola Droid will be the second. After that, well, who knows.

HTC must have received an endless number of questions on the matter, because later in the day it issued a statement about Android 2.2. HTC said:

"...if your phone was launched this year [2010], we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet."

Well, "most likely" isn't the most concrete proof I've ever heard, but that's all we're apparently going to get. So what does "this year" mean? It means the HTC Droid Incredible, Desire, EVO 4G, and Legend. HTC devices that may be left out of the Android 2.2 Froyo party? The HTC Droid Eris and Hero.

Surely, owners of the devices not receiving updates will feel sore at Google, HTC and their wireless network operator. The good news is, the Eris and Hero were recently updated from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1. That is a huge improvement for the device. So, perhaps those users will have to make due?

Lodge your complaints with your carrier.

Manufacturers that haven't clarified if/when their devices will be updated at all include Motorola and Samsung. Will we hear from them?
