New iMacs, .Mac Upgrade Rumored For Tuesday

What's Apple got up its sleeve for its Tuesday announcement? Apple blogs say the company plans to unveil sleeker iMacs and possibly an upgrade to the .Mac service, and that Apple plans a new flash-based video iPod next month.

Apple will announce new, slimmer iMac desktops, according to Macworld. The new line will have 20- and 24-inch monitors, while current iMacs offer 17-, 20-, or 24-inch displays. And the new iMacs will come with a new, slimmer keyboard, according to photos published on several blogs.

Investment research analyst Gene Munster, of the firm Piper Jaffray, said the new iMacs should shift investor focus away from early iPhone sales and "back to the more significant story of the Mac market share growth," according to AppleInsider. The new iMac release comes "ahead of the education buying season," he noted.

Apple has been grabbing market share from Windows recently.

Could there also be an upgrade to the .Mac online service Tuesday? MacRumors thinks there might be, noting that the site is due to be down for scheduled maintenance 10 a.m. to noon PDT Tuesday, the same time as the news conference.

And iPod lovers will get a NAND flash-based video device in late September, with 16 Gbytes of storage, DigiTimes reports.
