iPhone 4 Antenna Fix Revealed

YouTube video shows that solution to signal deterioration may be as close as the kitchen drawer.

It turns out it may be possible to fix a major bug afflicting the iPhone 4 with a common household item.

Many iPhone 4 buyers have reported that Apple's new smartphone drops its signal if the bottom left corner of the device is covered by the palm of the user's hand—a situation that's common when the phone is wielded by lefties.

The problem, apparently, is that holding the phone thusly covers a key portion of iPhone 4's antenna. But the fix may be as close as the kitchen drawer. In a video posted over the weekend, YouTube user "chedacheese" showed that he was able to rectify the problem simply by affixing small pieces of cellophane tape to the iPhone 4's bottom corners.

"We've got full signal strength here," said the YouTube poster, as he demonstrated the fix. "We are holding the device in its normal spots and it's keeping the signal bars pretty steady," he said. "It's pretty well taped on the sides, and no other place but on the sides," he added.

Of course, Apple fans who endured long lines and shelled out big bucks for the company's newest gadget may not be thrilled that they have to gum up their sleek new toy with Scotch tape for it to work properly. Apple has conceded that the flaw exists, but to date has not released a fix of its own.

“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas,” an Apple spokesman said last week.

“If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases,” the spokesman said, according to the Bloomberg news service.

iPhone 4 went on sale Thursday amid reports of product shortages and long lines at Apple stores and iPhone retailers Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Radio Shack.

iPhone 4 features a number of enhancements over its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS, including higher screen resolution (960 x 640 pixel technology dubbed Retina Display), a front-facing camera for video chats, and a longer lasting battery that affords 40% more talk time. It's also 24% thinner.
