Intel Tablet SoCs Pack LTE

Intel announced a new family of SoCs and modems for mobile devices under its Atom brand.

BARCELONA -- Intel announced a new family of SoCs and modems for mobile devices under its Atom brand, including what appear to be its first tablet chips with integrated LTE and entry-level chips using ARM Mali graphics cores. The chip giant focused much of its news on its laptop-class graphics now available for tablets.

"We're in all technologies, licensed and unlicensed, and are marrying them to compute and graphics," Aicha Evans, vice president and general manager of Intel's wireless platform R&D group, said, adding that the company is "not backing down" from mobile competitors MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Intel's new suite of processors, some of which have been re-branded from the low-cost Sofia family, target all mobile market tiers. The company introduced its first 14nm chips, moving from Baytrail to Cherrytrail micro-architectures, which are designed for mainstream to premium Windows and Android tablets. The new chips will have battery life similar to that of Baytrail.
