The race to launch innovative apps continues to heat up. Nokia and AT&T on Thursday announced they are partnering on a developer contest worth $10 million in cash and prizes.

Developers from around the world are eligible to participate in the 2010 Calling All Innovators, North America developer contest. All the app entries developers submit will be available for download at Nokia's Ovi Store. Winners will be chosen by both companies, and for the first time, consumers can also help select the finalists by voting through the number of apps they download, the two companies said. The new apps will be for Nokia's latest devices, including the Symbian^3-powered Nokia N8.

Last week, Sprint issued a challenge to developers to come up with innovative 4G apps in a contest with prizes including $50,000.

Developers will also have the opportunity to participate in a free session Nokia and AT&T are hosting during the CTIA Enterprise and Applications conference, Oct. 6-8 in San Francisco, to receive a tour of Nokia's Qt cross-platform application and UI framework, as well as its Web Runtime and Java tools. Nokia will also give all participating developers a complimentary Nokia N8 developer pack.

Submissions must be relevant to North American consumers, even though anyone is allowed to participate, according to the contest guidelines. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 28, 2011. There are over 17 categories and three winners will be chosen in each category. All category winners will receive $150,000 and grand prize winners will each receive an additional $100,000.

The two companies said the winning developers will also receive more than $6 million in marketing promotion in North America.

The contest shows "a clear message that we are serious about the North American market," said Purnima Kochikar, VP Forum Nokia, in a statement. "Developers have the tools, the support from AT&T and the marketing power of Nokia to get visibility for their apps. Additionally, developers can make their Qt-based app available in Ovi Store to Nokia customers globally, reaching tens of millions of customers."

More details about the contest can be found on the Calling All Innovators website.
