In the spirit of green computing, Intel has released a new series of 45-nanometer Xeon processors for workstations and servers. The low-voltage L5400 Series includes the 2.5-GHz L5240 chip and the 2.33-GHz L5410 chip. Both run at 50 watts, are up to 25 percent faster and have a 50 percent larger cache than Intel's previous generation of Xeon processors. Vendors supporting the L5400 series include Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Hitachi, IBM, NEC and Supermicro.
Also in the works: a new dual-core low-voltage processor with a 40-watt rating and clock speed of 3 GHz. Intel plans to ship that chip next quarter.
